A new study suggests that Viagra may be the first drug to halt the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

The researchers found that while Viagra, the drug's active ingredient, was still effective, more than half of the study participants were taking nitrates (often taken to boost sexual desire) for their symptoms. However, those taking nitrates had been experiencing an increased risk of blood clots and stroke, so they were advised to avoid using Viagra.
The researchers then compared the rates of blood clots and stroke with those of the other three common STDs.
The study found that among men who took nitrates for the common sexually transmitted disease, the risk of stroke was about twice as high as for men taking nitrates for HIV. The researchers also noted that among men taking nitrates for erectile dysfunction, the risk was about 1.3 times as high as that of men taking nitrates for syphilis.
Professor Andrew R. Healy, of the University of Oxford, said: "This is an important study to draw attention to the potential impact of Viagra on a group of men who have a very high risk of getting STDs."
In a statement, the British Medical Association, the trade body for the drug, said Viagra should not be recommended for use in younger men who have already suffered a heart attack, stroke or other medical complications. It was also not clear whether Viagra was safe for younger men or if the benefits were even greater for older men.
But Dr Healy said: "We're committed to improving the quality of life for patients and we remain committed to bringing this medicine to patients as quickly as possible."
The researchers also asked men to self-assess their ability to get and keep an erection during sex. The results showed that Viagra was as effective as the nitrates at reducing the severity of erectile dysfunction.
However, Viagra was not as effective as the nitrates at treating the symptoms of erectile dysfunction.
